Your Guide To The Different Dance Styles For Young Kids

Are your kids looking for an after school hobby? Why don’t they join dance classes? They are a great way to build self confidence, meet new friends, and get a little bit of exercise in between. A well put together dance program can encourage individuality, creativity and ultimately, a love of dance.

If you think that maybe your kid will enjoy dancing then sign them up. There are a variety of dance styles, which can make finding a class pretty simple. Some of the more popular dance classes for children include:

Ballet - A classical dance form described as the foundation of all other types of dance. These classes are set to classical music. Ballet requires specific movements, strength, coordination and flexibility. It is also great for teaching self-discipline and pride in appearance.

Jazz - Jazz dancing is always a favorite with children of all ages. They can be set to a variety of fun, upbeat music and there is much flexibility in the type of movements kids will perform. Jazz is a particularly creative form of dance which is loved by children with vast imaginations.

Tap - Tap is a high energy form of dance which requires kids to move their feet and “tap” in time to the music. A set of predetermined moves are consistently used throughout these classes. Tap is a great choice for promoting co-ordination and a sense of rhythm. It is also known for strengthening and loosening the foot, ankle and leg muscles.

Hip Hop - Hip hop dance classes are the new kids on the dance class block. They are set to music including funk, hip hop and rap. This style of dance is modern and flexible, so dance teachers often have a lot of choices in picking out choreographing routines.

Ballroom - Ballroom is geared more towards older kids, teens and adults. Children who seek to learn ballroom dancing will be introduced to classic dances such as the rumba, foxtrot and tango throughout their training.

Irish - The Irish are known for something more than St. Patrick’s Day. Their famous style of dance is known for its fancy footwork combined with a straight upper body. All of the dance movements are performed from the hips down, and classes are set to traditional Irish music such as the jig or reels.

Modern - Modern dance is a little more difficult than the others on this list. I only recommend this for kids who have more experience over someone who is just beginning. This difficult and technical style of dance helps kids further develop their coordination and balance.

Music and Movement - This class is often held exclusively for young children and their parents. They are an introduction class to dance and music and allow young children to become comfortable with body movement, develop coordination, and creativity.
